Introducing Mark & Kelli Turansky of New Horizons Counseling
New Horizons Counseling has been serving individuals and families since 1980 with a practical, cognitive approach that teaches people how to make constructive choices and regain control of their lives. The program is skills-forward and positive. It avoids aversion, hypnosis, drug therapy and hospitalization in favor of a step-by-step method that fits into real-world schedules. Mark Turansky, CSAC, is the Clinical Director and owner of New Horizons Counseling. A longtime Hawaii resident (kamaaina since 1979), Mark graduated from the University of Hawaii and has counseled professionally for over 40 years. His training and affiliations include certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), Addictions and Recovery Specialist, Wellness Counselor and Marriage Life Coach. He is also a member of the AAC and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). In 2012, the Hawaii Wellness Institute recognized his work with an honorary degree in Wellness, Coaching, Consulting and Counseling. Mark has also served as a pastor in local ministry, which is part of the foundation of his early counseling experience.
Kelli Turansky serves as Executive Director of New Horizons Counseling. She is a Certified Marriage and Addiction Life Coach as well as a longtime Hawaii entrepreneur. Kelli frequently partners with Mark in couples-focused services, an approach clients often find both direct and “guy friendly,” especially men who appreciate clear structure and tools for communication.
Clients most often find New Horizons for help with alcohol and drug problems, and Mark’s IOP model is designed to create minimal disruption to daily life. The program emphasizes a clear, structured progression of skills. It’s intentionally practical and solution-oriented rather than punitive. For people working through court or DMV matters from other states, New Horizons also runs an Out-of-State DUI track that focuses on compliance, documentation and coaching through the specific requirements you must satisfy remotely.
Anger management is another core service. New Horizons offers a 10-hour, one-on-one, court-approved course that blends individualized sessions with structured homework. The curriculum teaches prevention, containment and resolution, practical tools you can use at home and at work, and includes enrollment letters, progress reports and certificates as needed for courts, probation, HR or diversion programs.
Relationship counseling rounds out the practice. Mark’s format begins with awareness, getting clear on what’s really happening in the relationship, and then moves into “Heart Talk,” a structured way to handle conflict without spiraling into unproductive arguments. The goal is to restore connection and give couples a framework they can keep using long after sessions end.
Mark is also the author of the Figure it, Face it & Fix it series, the materials used in New Horizons programming. The main book, available in print, e-book and audio, presents his “Choice Process” approach to addiction recovery. Companion workbooks, including a teen edition, make the material more interactive during counseling. New Horizons is listed with SAMHSA, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
